The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MoLSA) plans to provide trainings to 150 thousand individuals in domestic works [?] this budget year.

The plan aims to equip trainees with the necessary skills in domestic work for future enrollment within the country or abroad, Girma Sheleme, MoLSA’s public relation and communication director, told WIC.

The trainings, which include care giving and housekeeping, range from one to three months period.

He said preparations are underway to provide the trainings in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Amhara, Tigray, Oromia and Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region.

Last budget year, the ministry provided similar trainings to 661 individuals, most of whom women. They are waiting to obtain a certificate of competence.

The Middle East is a major destination for Ethiopian domestic workers. And the Ethiopian government has signed memorandum of understanding with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Qatar. The agreements guarantee domestic workers to legally work in these countries.

MoLSA, last budget year alone, has approved employment contracts of over 182 thousand Ethiopian, for domestic works abroad.
