Economic laws fly out of the window in the face of Gedu Andargachew’s war against escalating prices

From Bahir Dar on June 9, 2014, ENA reported announcement at the 12th Regional Executive Council session of Amhara Region by President Gedu Andargachew Wednesday that he is prepared to take single strike action (“የማያዳግም እርምጃ”) on those escalating the prices of goods and services in the region.

The president is saying that, since the announcement of incremental salary raises, prices have been artificially pushed up in the region. He likened this to attempt to snatch those gains by profiteers through price gouging. The concern now is that the situation has become intolerable, with people unable “to afford the prices of daily necessities, such as food and other basic stuffs (የዋጋ ጭማሪው ከክልሉ ዋና ዋና ከተሞች ጀምሮ ወደ ታች እየባሰና እየተጋነነ በመሄዱ ዜጎች የሚያስፈልጋቸውን የምግብና ሌሎች ሸቀጦችን ገዝተው ለመጠቀም አልቻሉም ብለዋል።)

In that regard, in more like an attempt that would turn citizens against citizens, he called on the region’s civil servants from the regional capital to districts to cooperate with his administration in exposing greedy gougers, the famous ጥቆማ with all its attendant evils (የክልሉ መንግስት ሰራተኞችና መላ የክልሉ ህዝብ ከመንግስት ጎን በመቆም የዋጋ ጭማሪ የሚያደርጉ ስግብግብ ነጋዴዎችን በመጠቆም፣ አጥፊዎችን ለማጋለጥ የተለመደ ትብብራቸውን እንዲያደርጉ አሳስበዋል።)

It thus is evident that, in the face of failure to address the root problems on the supply side – the adequate production of goods and services and the consequent failure of normal economic production and macroeconomic policy – from Addis Abeba to regional administrations the TPLF regime is moving to waging wars on rising prices, which would have many innocent people victimized.

No surprise that the era unleashing war on profiteers was recently declared by none other than Prime Minister Hailemariam. The question now is on how many fronts could Ethiopia fight?

Already, the nation has been bogged down in the so-many “anti” fronts, such as: anti-terrorism, anti-civil society, anti-democracy, anti-human rights, anti-liberals, anti-freedom of the press, anti-freedom of opinion, anti-diversity of opinion, anti-pro-freedom of assembly, anti-religious freedom, anti-pro-Ginbot 7, anti-ESAT, anti-anti-torture campaigners, anti-TPLF bashers, anti-anti-ethnic politics, anti-anti-corruption campaigners, anti-anti-TPLF propaganda…
