Wajir resident magistrate Bildad Rogoncho yesterday urged Immigration to step up border control in light of the Ebola threat.

He was sentencing 18 Ethiopians to two years jail each for being in Kenya illegally.

Alternatively, they will pay a Sh100,000 fine.

The foreigners were arrested at the Qarse Kroftu area of Wajir while travelling to Nairobi from the Moyale border town.

They said they sneaked into Kenya after they were promised high paying jobs in Nairobi.

The Ethiopians said the human traffickers fled after they were intercepted by security officers from Giriftu police station.

More than 200 Ethiopians are currently serving sentences at the crowded Wajir GK Prison.
