Tigist Tufa, an Ethiopian who has lived in the Bronx, won the London Marathon with a surprise break in the 23rd mile, finishing in 2:23:22.

Tufa’s perfectly judged acceleration to a 5:19 mile blew apart the highly touted Kenyan challenge. Only former London and New York City champion Mary Keitany made it to the podium for Kenya, struggling to get away from Tirfi Tsegaye of Ethiopia for second in 2:23:40, with Tsegaye third one second behind.

Through a watchful, sometimes reluctant, race of fluctuating pace, it looked as if the Kenyans were biding their time. But after defending champion Edna Kiplagat drifted off the modest pace at 17 miles, and 2013 winner Priscah Jeptoo began to look flat and anxious, it was the Ethiopians who took control. Tufa, Tsegaye and Aselefech Mergia put a totally unexpected break on the Kenyans at 20 miles. Mergia held on for fourth in 2:23:53.

Florence Kiplagat and Jemima Sumgong were the next Kenyan finishers, with Portugal’s Ana Dulce Felix, 12th at New York City last year, in eighth.

Running her final London Marathon, Paula Radcliffe finished in 2:36:55. Radcliffe set the world record of 2:15:25 at the 2003 edition of the race, one of her three London victories.
