An article Mesfin Zewdie reposted on my Facebook has brought to my attention how Mahlet Fantahun, the sole female Zone 9 member in prison, was put in front of male security interrogators naked. The article speaks of how she was forced to do all sorts of ‘sports’.
My heart goes out to this traumatized and terrorized young girl for the sufferings and humiliation she has been subjected to. In addition to her own humiliation and against the background of searing noise of pain, crying and pleading of another person under torture next door forced her to sign a false confession of guilt.
This is contrary to all existing international instruments. Among plethora of many others, Part I, Article 1 (1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that by virtue of the right to self-determination, “citizens freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.” Contrary and in spite of this provision international law to which Ethiopia is state party, Mahlet has been forbidden the exercise of her free will and her rights as a human being and a member of society. She has been denied of them and is now criminalized and tortured for.
What these TPLF torture professionals – the brethren of Iraq’s Abu Ghraib shame – have been and are enjoying was squishing Mahlet’s pride and human dignity under their feet. It is reported that they possibly had their silly fun and fulfilment, taunting and jeering her in the TPLF-run dungeons.
In that, Mahlet Fantahun was no different from Christians in ancient Rome, whose persecution included being thrown alive to and mauled by lions especially in front of an audience of ancient Roman patricians in honor of their idols gods – the equivalent of today’s TPLF bosses that includes men such as Security chief Getachew Assefa and second fiddle players such as Abay Tsehaye, Sebhat Nega, Arkebe Oqubay and a few others.
I shudder at the thought of the vast increases in the extent and degree of inhuman behavior and criminality by the security institutions these selfish people have allowed, which operate like desensitized mafiosos!
Incidentally, note that Mahlet’s is not the first time for those monsters to commit this kind of crime. A shy male member of Semayawi Party – the loves to dread – from Arba Minch by the name of Gashaw Mersha was subjected to being naked before his interrogators and was asked to do striptease dance. For him that was a day he preferred death to life.
In Oct 2011, three TPLF security members seized and put in their car Abebe Akalu from a street side and sodomized him for three (read). He was senior council member of Andinet Party and a family man, who never drunk liquors nor smoked in his life. The TPLF forcibly made him drink strong liquor and raped him. Past midnight, they dropped him near his home, warning him not to be involved in anti-TPLF political activities. Abebe was national coordinator to pressure the TPLF to open public space and to stop harassment of opposition parties.
The shame and horror for Ethiopians is not about Abebe’s kidnapping. Rather for mostly a religious country, both Christian and Muslim, it is the forced sodomization of a man, a husband and a father by three TPLF thugs, paid by the Ethiopian taxpayers. This crime has repulsed Ethiopians; they have fumed with rage especially by the cruelty and gutter Ethiopia is made to sink so low because of the TPLF mafia. There was no investigation; no one was held responsible for this crime!
How could then the TPLF find time to develop the country, when it is busy raping, torturing and killing opposition members, much less cultivate t the human rights and respect the dignity of citizens? How could TPLF’s weird mind be able to find faith in Ethiopia that can help it lead along the path of culture and national development that benefits all citizens – without any favoritism or discrimination on grounds of ethnicity, gender, religion and personal persuasions, especially in politics?
Under international law, Ethiopia has agreed to observe the provisions of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. As in all its provisions, it is equally bound by Part I, Article 2, which rejects any exceptional circumstances to commit torture. It states, “No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture.” What then is the source of TPLF’s remit?
Testimonies about torture in Ethiopia
The 65th annual report of the United States on human rights observes:
“Members of the security forces reportedly committed killings. On August 8, security forces in Addis Ababa detained more than one thousand Muslims participating in Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
Authorities released most of the detainees shortly thereafter, but there were credible allegations some of the detainees died while in detention.
There continued to be reports of abuses, including killings, by the Somali Region Special Police …
There were several reported cases of disappearances of civilians after clashes between security forces and rebel groups. Security forces detained at least 12 residents of Alamata town in the northern Tigray Region in January following protests against government plans to demolish illegal housing units. The whereabouts of the detainees remained unknown at year’s end…[T]here were reports security officials tortured and otherwise abused detainees.
Sources widely believed police investigators often used physical abuse to extract confessions in Maekelawi, the central police investigation headquarters in Addis Ababa
Human Rights Watch reported abuses, including torture, occurred at Maekelawi. In an October report the NGO described beatings, stress positions, the hanging of detainees by their wrists from the ceiling, prolonged handcuffing, the pouring of water over detainees, verbal threats, and solitary confinement at the facility. Authorities continued to restrict access by diplomats and NGOs to Maekelawi.”
In spite of this, the TPLF regime on May 6, 2014 during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), the leader of the TPLF delegation Berhane Gebre-Christos denied to the Human Rights Commission there was any torture in Ethiopia! Read the article on this on The Ethiopia Observatory.
The sum of all this have become a wedge between Ethiopia and its national development. That is why as a nation our country is still stuck in the doldrums.
Hopefully not for long, for Mahlet’s sake and many young and courageous fighters for freedom and human dignity under the emblem of Zone 9!
I cannot be with you or go underground to continue what you have started. Trust me, my old bones, my young heart and my pen are with you every minute of the day, even when the sun hides!
