The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) is telling the international donor community:
The number of people being assisted with relief food is believed to be significantly higher than what was identified, and officially published in the 18 August Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) mid-year review.
In other words, what OCHA is saying is that there is huge disbalance in resources available and the people in need of assistance.
One of the problems is the fact that international community through the UN has to negotiate with the TPLF regime to agree that there is drought and famine and that there is substantial affected population. Unfortunately, the regime is irresponsibily engrossed in its pretension claiming that there are no people suffering from drought or hunger and that the situation is not out of hand.
However, even under ‘normal’ times in Ethiopia there is hunger.
It appears that now people could no longer take it that they have started lying down in the streets waiting to die there, notwithstanding the regime’s false promises and empty propaganda, one could listen to in the video below.
Recall that in mid-August 2015, after the US Ambassador Patricia Haslach visited feeding centers for under-five children and weak mothers in SNNPR, the man in the prime minister’s office – when addressing the visiting diaspora members – he lied to the nation and the internatonal community that the country has developed and it does not need any international humanitarian assistance, which usually is food.
In spite of that, it took exactly a month, the truth to come out with more people – like their livestock – falling victims to hunger, as the media have extensively reported.
Now those in power and are supposed to govern fairly and equitably (untrue in Ethiopia even under ‘normal’ conditions), instead of with lies and guns. It thus made a new reversal and now is appealing for humanitarian aid on September 22, 2015. This is simply because there started appearing starving people. They are falling by road sides and in the bushes, as it happened to livestock in Afar throughout the spring and summer; now children are begging in the streets and the foreign media are exposing this heartless story of our country!
It is a crime to starve people for political reasons and lying to foreign governments, the purpose of which is to slow international aid. Their folly and cruelty assumes that a few tens of thousands would perish and in the meantime the rains will reappear!
How twisted, inhuman and shameful!
Failed Belg rains worsen Ethiopia’s food insecurity on wider basis; food prices escalate as TPLF stumbles by its lack of appropriate policies or money to feed the nation
