Kiliinto ‘political’ prison, near Addis Abeba housing well-known political prisoners, on fire; cause unknown. Why are prisons on fire in Ethiopia these days?

It is reported that the Kilinto Prison, which houses major political figures, journalists and the Muslim Committee members, is burning. The cause of the fire is not known.

Suspicion points in the direction of the ruling party, the TPLF, which has shown such terrorist acts and behaviors in the past, including planting bombs and burning university campus buildings, among others.

In December 2015, the Gondar prison was burnt. Both fire and soldiers firing on prisoners to save themselves from the fire were shot down, in which they killed 17 persons. In Debre Tabor prison, Gojjam, too fire was reported three days ago. While some inmates were able to run out, outside many were criminally shot by the security forces, instead of saving them.

Similarly, the Angereb Prison, which has become famous for Col. Demeke Zewdu of the Wolqaity Question, since he is kept there to block the TPLF security from snatching him to take him to Tigray, has also been the site of too many firepowers from the TPLF around the prison. In the last two days, it too was reported to be on fire.

Kilinto has come to be associated with Bekele Gerba, Dejene Taffa, Adsisu Bulala, Gurmesa Ayano, Yonatan Tesfaye, Fikremariam Asmamaw, all of them political prisoners.

The Kilinto prion is reported to have underground, where torture is committed, or prisoners are left in the dark and naked, according to testimonies of people that had the misfortune of visiting it.
