In his renowned book The New Diplomacy: International Affairs in the Modern Age (1983), former Israeli foreign minister Abba Eban travels far in time and the exquisite in style to find his definition of diplomacy. At a prominent point in his book, he quotes an 18th century French writer by the name Le Trosne, who once had described diplomacy as:
“an obscure art which hides itself in the folds of deceit, which fears to let itself be seen and believes it can exist only in the darkness of mystery.”
That may not certainly be the case. Its acceptance also is a harsh verdict against so many renowned diplomats with great achievements. Sadly, however, two hundred-thirty-nine years later Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom seems to be improvising Le Tronse’s essence of diplomacy. Hence, all that the World Health Organization (WHO) director-general post candidate has to do is tinker with the latter part of the French writer’s description of diplomacy, i.e., expunging the last six words – ‘only in the darkness of mystery’ – and replacing them with “by consistent lies and self-replicating fogginess.”
This formulation has come to me after observing Dr. Tedros Adhanom in action. Right at this moment, the need for coining the phrase, above, came to mind following the meeting the Ethiopian foreign minister had on Thursday October 20, 2016 with USAID Assistant Administrator David Harden, who happens to be in charge of the Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance (DCHA) Bureau. He briefed the visiting dignitary, according to ENA in English (see below), on the current reality in Ethiopia, which has become cause for serious concern for the US Government.
There is no doubt that the US feels pressure from the ongoing state of violence by the TPLF-run state, the popular resistance, the sum of which has put Ethiopia’s future on a slippery path and in a real danger, unless this finds some resolution. The despatch to Addis Abeba of a senior official to remind Addis Abeba that its continuing concern is not given any weight might be something that could entail some action.
In an October 20, 2016 press release, the US Embassy in Addis Abeba has also given notification that the USAID’s assistant administrator was visiting Ethiopia from October 19-23, 2016. His mission’s import is very clear.
The press release explicitly states that Mr. Harden would “reiterate the long-standing call by the United States government for the Government of Ethiopia to respect its citizens’ constitutionally-guaranteed freedoms of expression and association.”
The statement further underlined the USAID official would remind senior Ethiopian officials:
“[T]he importance of peaceful dialogue, democratic reform, political pluralism and respect for fundamental freedoms for the sustainability of Ethiopia’s economic and development gains.”
During his scheduled visit in Ethiopia, the press release further indicated, he “would also meet non-governmental organizations, who are important to developing credible democratic governance and civil society.” In addition, as part of USAID’s mission in Ethiopia, Mr Harden would also “meet with officials from the United Nations, including the World Food Program, to discuss refugee issues and efforts to lift rural regions out of poverty and create communities resilient to climate shocks.”
What we learned about his mission and how Dr. Tedros Adhanom has manipulated the information is extremely troubling. ENA quotes the foreign minister briefing the US official about Ethiopia’s interest in strengthening collaboration with the United States in the fields of health, education, food security, agricultural productivity and growth of productivity in general.
This is vividly placed in the lead paragraph on the Amharic ENA news on the USAID Assistant Administrator’s visit. The misinformation by the foreign minister implies that the US official’s visit was all about Ethiopia and United States cooperation in the areas mentioned above.
At a time of serious distress across Ethiopia, this is the import of the message to Ethiopians. It shows not only that the TPLF lacks courage to face the fact that its violent actions are under severe criticisms abroad. But also it is a subversion against the US actions, as people are murmuring criticizing Washington for failing to curb its lawless ally.
Moreover, there is no mentioning in the Amharic story about Assistant Secretary Harden being in charge of USAID bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance.
It is our sense from the visiting official’s statement that the visit primarily had to do with the concern and discomfort the US must be feeling about implementation of the state of emergency law in the face of determined popular defiance and resistance against the backdrop of the regime’s lawlessness.
While Dr. Tedros Adhanom has reduced the purpose of the visit the US to being exploratory whether the TPLF regime is desirous to cooperate with the US in the above-mentioned fields, the implementation of the State of Emergency Law was seemingly made to have been raised as an afterthought.
In fact, in a self-congratulatory manner Dr. Tedros Adhanom says that within days of its promulgation it is seen enabling the regime to reembark on its path of accelerated development. This is discredited, among others, by the Gondar’s three-day successful strike only last week. Before that the same thing in Bahir Dar.
It is in reading the foreign minister’s repeated attempts to keep the people of Ethiopia in the dark that I turned to exposing Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s integrity problems. His behavior has forced me to see him no differently from Sadam Hussein’s Minister of Information, commonly known as Chemical Ali in Bagdad, otherwise, Ali Hassan al-Majid. His lies astounded everyone, in fact at times humorously with his curses against American soldiers and the story of their deaths he imagined at Bagdad’s gate. While Chemical Ali was blabbering this, the US was showing the world on CNN how its soldiers were 0marching on Bagdad, with as little resistance.
Dr Tedros’s intelligence is no match to the other inventor of lies,Joseph Gobbels. He was Hitler’s propaganda minister, who started his popular extermination foray against Germans with his words: “no princes, only Germans… Jewish system of exploitation … for plundering of our people”.
While Hitler’s avowed hatred of socialism increasingly became clear, at least, Gobbels after the ideological disavowal was open in stating, “I no longer fully believe in Hitler. That’s the terrible thing: my inner support has been taken away”, according to his diary.
Seen against this, Dr. Tedros Adhanom is not about any principles at all, as we have seen him how he behaved and acted in the case of Habtamu Ayalew’s visa denial, if one should recall the inhumanity even for comparison.
That is why we have been telling the world the WHO candidate from Ethiopia suffers from serious flaws of integrity and principles. As a politburo member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the foreign minister has repeatedly shown how comfortable he has been in communicating lies to defend his party’s violations of human rights. Following the declaration of the state of emergency and the killings, Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom has been defending the killings of citizens.
As usual, all the same ENA is instructed not to tell in the Amharic story who Mr. Harden is and the purpose of his mission. Why the US Government has sent him as envoy to make a demarche about the danger arising from the TPLF State of Emergency Law and the suppression of the rights of citizens has impacted on the human rights of the Ethiopian people.
The substantive and qualitative differences in this one story, in two languages (Amharic and English), also reflects on the credibility deficit the TPLF suffers from, as Ethiopia’s ruling party kept in power for the past quarter century by guns, deceits and foreign financial, military, intelligence and diplomatic support.
We know from our people in Amhara and Oromia regions, two of the most-angered by the mistreatments they receive from the corrupt TPLF regime, they are determined to see its back, even though already thousands of Ethiopians have been imprisoned,a good number killed and citizens’ human rights suspended.
Some TPLF officials, as in the case of the mayor of Sebeta, have boasted their imprisoning of one thousand people on grounds of suspicion for destroying equipment.
This much power to arrest, torture and kill merely on grounds of uncorroborated suspicion in a small town of 73,000 people and 9,000 sq.km, in the hands of unaccountable officials is a tragic confirmation of the extent of abuses and the injustices Ethiopians throughout the country have been suffering from. Of the Sebeta case, the Ethiopian Human Rights Project (EHRP) tweeted:
In addition, thousands of Ethiopians have been killed, especially the youth execution style on a daily basis, mostly in Oromia. This makes Dr. Tedros Adhanom, the WHO candidate from Ethiopia to the post of director-general, an accomplice to crimes in the implementation of the SoE law. This action he currently carries out is not the quality the world wants to see in WHO director-general.
For that matter, we have amply discussed in several articles if he is qualified for the job, whose election by bribing nations would only destroy the world’s only international organization dealing with national and international health issues.
Regarding the qualifications of the six WHO candidates, the respected Lancet also had something to say in a typically British stiff upper-lip manner. Therefore, while discussing the qualifications of the six candidates, anyone could easily see which of the references relate to Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s candidacy. Thus Lancet states:
From the foregoing one could see not only the Ethiopian foreign minister has deficit of qualifications, experience and vision. But also he has credibility problem, as various articles so far written on him could show. No one would contest the fact that integrity is one of the requirements in selecting the right person from among those interested aspirants for the job.
To get a sense of the huge deficit in Dr. Tedros Adhanom, see from one same story in two languages, discussed above, to realize, how he has managed to manipulate, having special gift for hide and seek.
Is the international community ready and willing to be constantly conned and misinformed, just as the Ethiopian people are, if by accident if the influence of others’ wealths, he assumes leadership of the only international health organization a a hired hand?
The assumption that US billionaires, philanthropists and the pharmaceutical industry supports Tedros Adhanom does not mean that the peoples of the world must handover the United Nations World Health Organization, whose primary task is disease surveillance and setting guidelines for vaccines and other medicaments should be surrendered to those that must be supervised!
Putting WHO in Tedros Adhanom’s hands amounts to that!
WHO is in real danger!

Ethiopia, USAID set to enhance bilateral cooperation
Addis Ababa October 20/2016 (ENA): Ethiopia and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have agreed on ways of deepening cooperation by promoting effective and efficient bilateral engagement.
The two sides have been cooperating in various development fields including in health, education, food security, agricultural production and productivity as well as good governance and democracy.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Tedros Adhanom today received Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for David Harden at his office where they pledged to further broaden their cooperation and strengthen bilateral development efforts.
Dr. Tedros said Ethiopia will continue engaging with USAID as the agency has rendered greater contributions in the progress Ethiopia has registered in its development programs, according to the ministry Spokesperson who attended the talks.
The two sides agreed to work closely on various development sectors in a more productive manner.
The U.S. official also received briefings about Ethiopia’s latest state of emergency which Dr. Tedros said is aimed at protecting and maintaining peace in the country.
Commending the enormous progresses in Ethiopia in areas of health and education, David Harden said the talks with Ethiopia’s minister also stressed on the need for openness, respect for democracy and constitutional freedom.
He said: “we believe that providing this space for civil society and democracy to flourish is a foundational point for future Ethiopia.”
The bilateral talks also covered ways of creating economic opportunities for the youth, according to Harden.
Does Dr. Tedros Adhanom have the requisite qualifications to become next WHO Director-General?
