ESAT News (April 20, 2017) The Amhara region prison commission says it is unable to feed and provide medical services to the over 66,000 prisoners under its custody and called on authorities to seek solutions to the dwindling resources to take care of the prisoners.
The commission said the number of prisoners had tripled since the anti-government protests last year and most of the prisoners have never seen a day in court.
It said it has used all the budget meant to feed the prisoners and health facilities have refused to treat the prisoners as the commission is behind its medical bills.
The commission said there are prisoners who have been detained for up to ten years without due process of the law.
Tens of thousands of people remain in detention in the country following the anti-government protest last year and a state of emergency declared in October.
