In its 142nd special report — dwelling on the state of emergency that was declared on October 8, 2016 — the Human Rights Council of Ethiopia has documented the abuses and impunity the so-called ‘trainee prisoners’ TPLF has labelled them had been inhumanely subjected to.

The report is a good window into TPLF’s practices of tortures throughout Ethiopia. The report also bears testimony on continuing TPLF regime’s extrajudicial killings, mass incarcerations and disappearances throughout Ethiopia.

To confuse the nation and the international community, the regime has at the same time countenanced its practices of torture and related crimes was engaged in deceitful political propaganda of reform and renewal.

Detentions without due process of those that demand their rights are documented, as well as the regime’s continuation of its extrajudicial killings, mass incarcerations and disappearances throughout Ethiopia. At the same time, it is also engaged in deceitful political propaganda of reform and renewal of ruling party politics and institutional practices. This latest 142nd report of the Council’s 142nd report details the level of impunity by political bodies and the security forces.

During this time, the Council has published photos and disclosed names of 19 individuals it said were shot and killed by security forces. Accordingly, in west Wollega, 29 year-old Degefu Shiferaw and Megersa Bedilu, 28 were shot and killed by the security forces. The report stated that these actions by the regime might have been targeted against those that took part in mass protests to demand respect for their human and democratic rights.

In Arsi Zone, security forces broke into a house and killed three brothers Maregu Jemalo, Abdisa Jemalo and Tola Jemale. Two brothers were hurriedly buried in one grave, while one of the brothers was buried with Mohamed Beyano, another victim of the impunity of the security forces.

The council has also listed the names of hundreds of people who were detained since the declaration of the martial law.

Hundreds of protesters, 669 by the admission of the regime, have been shot and killed by security forces during the anti-government protests in 2015 and 2016, mostly in August and September. Tens of thousands of people still remain under detention.
