The renowned American five-star army general Dwight D. Eisenhower, who in post-World War II United States later became a statesman and US President (1953-1961), in his 1961 farewell address to the American people cautioned:

                         =====000=====

During the fifteen-year Lebanese civil war (1975-1990) that witnessed bloody confrontations between a coalition of Lebanese Christian groups on one side against the joint forces of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), left-wing Druze and Muslim militias on the other, Lebanon suffered the deaths of 150,000 of its citizens and wounding of 200,000 people.

To make matters worse, the unsuspected peace-maker Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, with the aegis of the Arab League, brokered a truce between the fighting sides. It is through that agency, Assad conveniently stationed 12,000 Syrian troops in Lebanon in 1976. Those Syrian troops were funnelled disguised as the PLO Army. Assad’s goal was to put the PLO under Syrian influence and “prevent the disintegration of Lebanon.” This turned Syria into Lebanon’s overlord and its occupation lasting until its withdrawal was forced upon it.

Following the 1970 coup d’etat by Air Force General Hafez al-Assad Syria, who seized power, Syria has been under the Alawite ethnic minority (Shia Muslims), whose justification was his being the “Correctionist Movement” in the Ba’ath Party.

In his own right, in 1993 during his party’s split and the challenge to his power, Meles Zenawi also did his ‘correctionist exercise’, because he expelled some people from the Front, justifying it as the “danger of Bonapartism in Ethiopia”!

That ‘correctionist move’ allowed the ethnic minority Alawites to be in command over the whole Syria (majority Sunni) the way they saw fit for them, leading to the ongoing Syrian civil war (2011-). I am not sure anyone can persuade me the TPLF has not leafed through Assad’s experiences and of others in world history, to roost on heads of Ethiopians for almost three decades now.

All said and done, the Alawites wanting the whole cake for themselves have reduced Syria into a debris, its old-self in one of the oldest nations in the world. For Alawites to remain in power countless Syrians have to die, historic towns and marks of civilisation destroyed and citizens displaced and fleeing for their lives around the world.

In all form and ambition, the Tigray People’s liberation Front (TPLF) secretly likens itself to the Alawites. It has resolved to remain in power no matter what. I urge them to see what Assad must possibly have hidden into the darkest recess of his soul: REGRET, having summoned the evil he could not dismiss. He might have told himself at one point or another Syria should not have come this way.

While the last state of emergencies (SoEs) have not worked for the TPLF, why would a force in power try it again, when there was no guarantee it could produce better result? Interesting is not only TPLF’s deceit. But also it is its greed. This time around the institutional agency overlooking the SoE is empowered to decide on land issues, including the power to give and take!

The TPLF must open its eyes, if still that capacity is intact inside it, and see that Ethiopians are mostly preoccupied with the latest state of emergency targeting non-Tigrean Ethiopians for either imprisoning or secret elimination!

On the occasion of Christ Resurrection, going forward that’s why Ethiopians must continue their struggle to ensure that our nation would not suffer the fate either of Lebanon or Syria!

The first step to ensure that is not to allow under any pretext the TPLF to steal the wind out of the sail of the Ethiopian protest movement.

The new prime minister must speak to the nation his intentions and next move. If his ideas are good for all Ethiopians, he could enjoy support. He has promised to work for the wellbeing of every citizens. This he must show with action, no longer with rhetorics!

LONG LIVE ETHIOPIA AND ITS PEOPLE!
