Following a debate at the African Union’s annual heads of state summit in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, the regional bloc voted for all member states to withdraw from the Interational Criminal Court (ICC). However, the resolution is non-binding with Nigeria and Senegal the only countries to oppose a withdrawal.

China’s government has denied reports that it spied on the servers at the African Union’s Chinese-built headquarters for more than five years, gaining access to confidential information.

In an investigation published by French newspaper Le Monde, China, which also paid and built the computer network at the AU, allegedly inserted a backdoor (in French) that allowed it to transfer data. The hack wasn’t detected until Jan. 2017 when technicians noticed that between midnight and 2 am every night, there was a peak in data usage even though the building was empty. After investigating, it was found that the continental organization’s confidential data was being copied on to servers in Shanghai.

Sharing my perception of the African Union (AU)

My picture of the African Union (AU)

Am not sure I could be the best judge. However, I am reacting to what seemed an earnest request by Yibeltal Gebreegziabher, a Twitter friend. He asked me in a private mail my views about the ongoing AU meetings. For some reason, I sympathised with his friendly request. And these are my views about the African Union.

I begin with the question: who could take the AU seriously? . See the TPLF ongoing massacres in Ethiopia and robberies by mafia ensconced in state power; the endless deaths in Burundi, Congo/Kinshasa and South Sudan. The AU is at peace in its slumber! Africa can manage without it!

Interestingly, the Congo leader Kabila a press conference for the first time in five years. Wt used all the time to demean the United Nations, the country’s intermediary the Catholic Church, Western nations. In spite of the tens of daily deaths, he said Congo is stable. One regional organisation he did not attack was the African Union (AU).

Joseph Chilengi: African Union (AU) hires unguided missile to slam the International Criminal Court (ICC)

17 Jul

Editor’s Note:

How much must African dictators and their club, the African Union, paid Joseph Chilengi, to make such emotional speech from Kigali, Rwanda, where the butchers of African peoples are caucusing in their annual heads of state summit? Chilengi may have not noticed that one of the summit’s agenda items is Burundi.

The African Union (AU) at its 608th meeting asked Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda to honour their pledged air assets and deployment of additional force enablers to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Through a statement by the Peace and Security Council, seen by the Star on Wednesday, the AU said prolonged negotiations between the UN and the Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) should be finalised to facilitate the deployment of these air assets.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom for WHO DG:  Picking a wheeler-dealer as regional candidate AU shortchanges Africa’s able professionals & WHO itself       Part I

In a serialized five-part article, I am setting off to revisit the candidature of fellow countryman Dr. Tedros Adhanom to the post of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Once again, I feel privileged to share with readers my perspective as well as my deeply-felt concerns regarding the future leadership of this vitally and internationally important norm-setting and operational arm of the United Nations system in the field of health.

How AU enables Ethiopian regime to suppress international criticism

Media and civil society at the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa face a stark choice: avoid criticising Ethiopia, or risk being denied access to the continental body. SIMON ALLISON reports on how the Ethiopian government uses its role as gatekeeper to the AU to keep journalists, researchers and activists in check.

Just like that shiny AU building distracts the eye from the relative poverty of the suburb around it, so hosting the AU in Addis Ababa helps to disguise and obscure the darker elements of the Ethiopian growth story.

Is the African Union solely Ethiopian or African?

ADDIS ABABA – The African Union headquarters, 24-storeys of clean lines and soaring glass, is Addis Ababa’s tallest building. It looks all wrong in the context of its dusty, low-rise surroundings (although increasingly less so, as the city develops furiously around it). It’s almost like it was accidentally transplanted from Shanghai or Beijing, which, in a way, it was – China paid for and built it. But there’s no question that it belongs. The building is Africa’s diplomatic centre, and Addis is the continent’s diplomatic capital. There’s nowhere else it could be.
