How the NSA built a secret surveillance network for Ethiopia

The NSA refused to comment on whether Lion’s Pride continues to eavesdrop on the region, but no evidence suggests it was ever shut down. There is, however, good reason to believe that U.S. efforts have strengthened the hand of the Ethiopian government. And a decade and a half after it was launched, Ethiopia’s human rights record remains as dismal as ever.


“A WARM FRIENDSHIP connects the Ethiopian and American people,” U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced earlier this year. “We remain committed to working with Ethiopia to foster liberty, democracy, economic growth, protection of human rights, and the rule of law.”

Indeed, the website for the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia is marked by press releases touting U.S. aid for farmers and support for public health infrastructure in that East African nation. “Ethiopia remains among the most effective development partners, particularly in the areas of health care, education, and food security,” says the State Department.

12 dead in ‘al-Shabab attack’ on Kenyan town Mandera

At least 12 people have been killed in an attack in Kenya believed to have been carried out by Islamist militants from Somalia.

Police in the Kenyan border town of Mandera said the attackers – thought to belong to al-Shabab – used explosives during the overnight attack.

እነማን ይሆኑ? ማን ይሆን? የሃገር ደህንነት ሳይሆኑ፥ የሕወሃት ሰላዮች ላይ እያነጣጠረ ላለፉት አራት ወራት ሲለቅማቸው የከረመው/ሙት? እኛም ለጥይቄው መልሱን አናውቅም። ምን ውጤት እንደሚያስከትል አናውቅም – ለውጥ መምጣቱን ባንጠራጠርም!

አንድ አበክረን የምናውቀው ሃቅ ግን፥ በሕወሃት አስተዳደር ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ በዜጎች እኩልነት ላይ ያልተመሠረተ አመራር ባለበት ሁኔታ፡ ሃገሪቷ ልማቷም አርኪ ሰላምና ደህንነቷ የተረጋገጠ ይሆናል ብሎ ማሰብ ቀድሞውንም ተላላነት ነው። የኢትዮጵያ ሕዝብ ለማን ደህንነት ነው ይህቺን የጋራ ሃገራችንን መንከባከብ የሚገባው? ለዘረኛው ሕወሃትና አቃጣሪዎቹ?

ከታሪክ እንደምናስታውስው፥ ባሪያ ለፈንጋዩ የራሱን ደህነንትና ነጻነት ወደጎን ገፍቶ፡ ቀንና ሌሊት ለፈንጋዩ ምቾትና ደህነንት ብቻ ሲኳትን ዘላለም ይኖራል ብሎ እንደማሰብ የሚቆጠር ነው! አይታሰብም!

    We have hard time remembering what the purpose of Barack Obama’s visit to Ethiopia was at the end of July 2015. However, we recall that he gave the TPLF regime, he congratulated as ‘democratically elected’, US instruction to continue to bravely fight terrorism in the Horn of Africa, especially in Somalia.

On April 2, as I waited in a doctor’s office near Nairobi, the anchor of Kenya’s morning news broadcast began reporting what would prove to be a horrific attack on Garissa University by the Somali terrorist group al-Shabab. As the early news trickled in, some people around me looked at the television screen, and others just checked their phones. Most, however, just stared impatiently at the doctor’s door.
