US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson traveled to Ethiopia this week to underscore US support for a crucial partner that finds itself in a crisis.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned unexpectedly on February 15 in the wake of violent anti-government protests. The government then imposed a nationwide state of emergency that lawmakers endorsed earlier in March.

    When an invader aiming to divert citizens’ attention from its domestic problems and invades a neighboring country, it is unusual for the United States to assume posture of silence, whose posture now has been taken as disinterest in matters of war and peace beyond its shores. We do not remember any such moment in US foreign policy, especially as pertains to a volatile region, smitten by poverty, repression, corruption, ethnic problems and massive internal discontent.
