Mass protests force Ethiopia to free opposition leader Bekele Gerba and seven other political figures suddenly cleared of charges and let out of jail after being arrested in 2015

Ethiopia has released a senior opposition leader from prison and dropped all charges against him after demonstrators blocked roads and staged protest rallies in several towns.

Bekele Gerba, secretary general of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), was arrested in December 2015 after mass protests broke out in the Oromiya region over accusations that farmers were being forced to sell land with scant compensation.

አቶ በቀለ ገርባን ጭምሮ በሽብር ወንጀል ክስ የተመሠረተባቸው ሃያ ሁለት የኦሮሞ ፌደራሊስት ኮንግረስ አመራር አባላትና ደጋፊዎች ጉዳይ በዝግ ችሎት እንዲታይ ፍርድቤቱ ጥየቀ።

የተከሳሽ ጠበቆች “ጥያቄው ኢሕገ መንግሥታዊ ነው” ሲሉ ተቃውመዋል።

ባለፈው ሣምንት ሳይቀርቡ የቀትሩት አምስቱ ተከሳሾች ዛሬ ቀርበዋል።

አዲስ አበባ — አቶ በቀለ ገርባን ጨምሮ በእስር የሚገኙ አራት የኦሮሞ ፈደራሊስ ኮንግረስ አመራር አባላት በእስር ቤት ውስጥ በረሃብ አድማ ላይ መሆናቸውን ቤተሰቦቻቸው አስታውቀዋል።
አድማውን ለማድረግ የወሰኑት በማረምያ ቤቱ አስተዳደር ላይ ላቀረቡት የመብት ጥሰት አቤቱታ ጉዳያቸው የሚከታተለው ፍርድ ቤት የሰጠውን ውሳኔ በመቃወም መሆኑን አመልክተዋል።

የኤፌኮ አመራር አባላት አቶ ጉርሜሳ አያሌው፣አቶ አዲሱ ቡላላ፣ አቶ ደጀኔ ጣፋና አቶ በቀለ ገርባ ከትላንት በስትያ ከቀትር በኃላ ጀምሮ የረሃብ አድማ ላይ እንደሚገኙ የቤተሰቦቻቸው አባላት ለአሜሪካ ድምፅ ገልጸዋል።

A little over twenty days from now, the United Nations General Assembly at its resumed 70th session is scheduled to elect five states members to serve on the Security Council a two year term as non-permanent members. Beginning January 1, 2017, the elected five states would join the other 10 in the Council to preside over the question of international peace and security and the dangers of war wherever, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

*   The police failed to bring Tesema Regasa and 15 others in the same file to the court

The Addis Abeba prison administration Qilinto prison police have this morning brought prominent opposition figure Bekele Gerba and the 21 others in the same file for a hearing at a court all barefoot. The detainees were also wearing mere shorts and t-shirts when they appeared at the Federal High Court 19th Criminal Bench here in the capital.
