At the just concluded Human Rights Council (HRC), which sent to Ethiopian officials 252 recommendations to seriously consider and implement them to improve the worsening human rights situation in the country. This action was taken as a result of an interactive discussion between Ethiopian officials and member states of the United Nations, with Council members leading the process.

Meron Admasu wrote on August 19, 2014 about a VOA journalist Henok Semaegzer’s recent effort to subvert the truth regarding the cancellation of the honor to be bestowed by Azusa Pacific University (APU) on TPLF assigned prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn. She accused the journalist of crafting “outstanding lies to protect of the current TPLF regime in Ethiopia and at the same time show how much he is undermining the intelligence of millions of Ethiopians and put dust on our eyes.”

For a while, the VOA hid itself behind the claim that it is always committed to the truth, without showing any interest in taking action.

This article is an expression of this writer’s disappointment at a news item that appeared Saturday on the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) page regarding the investigation by the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on May 6, 2014 of Ethiopia’s commitment, behavior and human rights performance as the Organization’s member, signatory to its Charter and several international human rights instruments.
