The Federal High court fourth criminal bench has today passed a guilty verdict against Yonatan Tesfaye, former opposition Blue Party public relations head.

Yonatan was first arrested in December 2015, barely a month after the first wave of a year-long #Oromoprotests erupted. He was held incommunicado during the pre-trial weeks and was subsequently charged in May 2016 under Ethiopia’s infamous anti-terrorism proclamation (ATP).

A little over twenty days from now, the United Nations General Assembly at its resumed 70th session is scheduled to elect five states members to serve on the Security Council a two year term as non-permanent members. Beginning January 1, 2017, the elected five states would join the other 10 in the Council to preside over the question of international peace and security and the dangers of war wherever, in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

    So £200 million is coming off public health budgets in Britain while a similar sum is spent on health and education in the repressive, one-party state of Ethiopia. Yet studies show aid entrenches despotic regimes, fuels conflict and leads to less state spending on healthcare.

    British-backed projects in Ethiopia even supported brutal schemes to remove farmers from their lands. And £4 million went on the east African state’s answer to the Spice Girls.

It is a decade since we began striving together to transform the Conservative Party into a modern force fit for government, so I was delighted to see you confound your critics again at last month’s Election.
