In an article giving a good sense of what to expect in the World Health Organization (WHO) in the coming months and years and, following the election of Dr. Tedros Adhanom as Director-General, author Laurie Garrett, Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) on May 25, 2017 wrote:

“For the first time in its seventy-year history, the World Health Organization (WHO) will, effective July 1, be led by a nonphysician, an African, and a person from the global South. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of Ethiopia campaigned in an unprecedented election that gave 186 nations equal voice and saw three globetrotting candidates plead their cases.”

So far, the nomination Wedenesday by the 140th Executive Board session of the World Health Organization (WHO) of three of the six candidates does not come as unexpected for anyone closely following the work of the organization.

However, more important is how the votes were cobbled up to enable the board arrive at its decision, i.e., the nomination, namely of:

Dr. Tedros Adhanom (Ethiopia), Dr. David Nabarro (United Kingdom) and Dr. Sania Nishtar (Pakistan).

On The Himalayan Times of January 4, 2017, the picture of Ethiopia’s candidate to the director-general post of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr.Tedros Adhanom has stradrled across two columns. The misrepresentation therein had me wonder if the six competing candidates’ election processes to that same post were already over and my fellow countryman had been selected.

I was preparing Sunday evening to get further clue about the author of a tweet I had retweeted earlier in the afternoon. I joined it not only because of its cute brevity. But also I loved its forthrightness in rejecting Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s candidacy to the highest post at the World Health Organization (WHO), for which the candidate already had his first job interview on November 1, 2016 that had gone terribly bizarre.

The world is welcoming November 2016 shortly.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) lengthy election processes, leading to the appointment by the World Health Assembly (WHA) of the ninth director-general of WHO in May 2017 goes into gear for its first phase live forum with the six candidates on November 1-2, 2016 at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva. Surely, one of the six would be picked up in May 2017 as the new director-general and assume his/her responsibilities on 1 July 2017.

For Habtamu Ayalew’s sake & the many nameless TPLF-victims, Dr. Tedros Adhanom must finally show decency by withdrawing his name from candidacy for WHO director-general post!

The end is drawing closer

By the ongoing Ethiopian popular uprising, spearheaded by the people of Oromia and Amhara regions, Ethiopians have been empowered and are resolved to dethrone the TPLF, a regime that has been in power for a quarter century through the suppression and oppression of Ethiopians in all sorts of inhuman ways.
