#HRes128: Supporting respect for human rights and encouraging inclusive governance in Ethiopia

Hereunder is a copy of the H.Res.128 adopted by the United States Congress in Supporting respect for human rights and encouraging inclusive governance in Ethiopia.

The resolution by the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee has 110 co-sponsors. There are two versions of the resolution, I understand, and more accurate is the PDF content.

This is only the beginning of the task for this resolution to become a law and have its desired effect in Ethiopia. The US Senate must also adopt S. 168, which so far has 23 cosponsors. At its adoption, possibly following reconciliation, once the president’s signature is affixed to it, it becomes the law of the land, guiding the United States’ action.

Introduced in House (02/15/2017):

Condemns:

    (1) the killing of peaceful protesters and excessive use of force by Ethiopian security forces;

    (2) the detention of journalists, students, activists and political leaders who exercise their constitutional rights to freedom of assembly and expression through peaceful protests; and

    (3) the abuse of the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation to stifle political and civil dissent and journalistic freedoms.
