    Ethiopia’s export performance has fallen increasingly short of GTP targets, reaching a new low of just 25pc

As the Growth & Transformation Plan (GTP) period draws to a close, Ethiopia continues to lag far behind its lofty ambitions. The latest Ministry of Industry(MoI) report, yet to be released, indicates that the country, which targeted an export revenue of 1.6 billion dollars from the manufacturing sector in 2013/14, ended up with a dismally low 398 million dollars – just 25pc of the target. The revenue, nevertheless, does show an improvement of 41.5pc compared to the performance of the previous year.

The World Bank this year set a record high funding to Ethiopia.

UntitledThe record was set both in terms of disbursement and commitment. Guang Zhe Chen, director of WB for Ethiopia, speaks about issues pertinent to the economy. One such case, perhaps, is access to finance. Manufacturing and the private sector is the other topic where Chen shared his views. Birhanu Fikade of The Reporter sat down with the country director to talk about the recent recurrent budget. Chen warns that Ethiopia should not go back to the double-digit inflationary status following the salary adjustments. Excerpts:

Is Ethiopia to face danger of double-digit inflation, again?

Although it still is in single digit, Ethiopia’s 12-month moving average inflation rate is signaling change to a higher direction, with the Central Statistical Agency (CSA) recording 7.4 percent in June 2013 in its Consumer Price Index.
