The setting

Since the March 23, 2015 understanding between Ethiopia, Egypt and the Sudan, a lot of capable Ethiopians have kindly shared their insights and interpretation of the deal and concerns too. Notwithstanding that, however, the TPLF regime has persisted in its determination to withhold all and any information about the agreement it has entered into with these two neighbors and riparian states of the Nile Basin.

Shame On Me For Being Proud of President Obama!

First, I am never proud of politicians. Second, I am never ashamed of politicians. I am often dismayed and even angry over things they did (said) or did not do (say). Mostly, I am critical of politicians on some issue of accountability or lack of transparency. I often rage against their corruption, hypocrisy, duplicity, cynicism, amorality and immorality. Perhaps I should not let them get my goat that way. After all, politicians and members of the world’s oldest profession share one thing in common. They are shameless. I can’t help shaming shameless politicians. The question for me is not whether to shame or not to shame a politician but whether I should be ashamed of myself for being proud of a shameless politician.

Meles the oracle

Meles the oracle

It was the end of autumn 2009. As handpicked political cadre, a product of Meles Zenawi’s political training and ethics, Hailemariam used to be invited especially since late 2009 and in early 2010 to give company to the then prime minister on all his rare and unannounced, disguised trips to the surrounding regions of Addis Abeba.

A Year after Meles’s Death, Citizens’ Rights Have Yet to Be Revived in Ethiopia

Freedom House Statement

The death of Ethiopian prime minister Meles Zenawi in August 2012 after two decades in power sparked hope that the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) would undertake reforms to open up the political system and loosen the harsh restrictions imposed on civil society, the media, and opposition parties. However, one year into the administration of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Meles’s successor, not much has changed in the highly repressive country.

Ethiopia Whitewashing Barrenness of 22 Years of ‘Democracy Building’

19 Jul

by Keffyalew Gebremedhin – The Ethiopia Observatory

hailemariam with EU delegationPrime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn Wednesday told EU parliamentary delegation, headed by Sub-Committee Chairwoman for Human Rights Barbara Lochbihler, for Ethiopia democracy “is a matter of survival”. For a regime hooked on achieving permanence in power, embarrassingly every visitor must have heard this show of the never ending folly and emptiness of the past 22 years , yet again. What is disturbing is that in an otherwise docile country, the prime minister chose to employ it yet again at a time when the people are increasingly vowing enough is enough.
