Jimma University explosion injures 33 students, 2 in critical condition

#Oromoprotests: Ethiopia (ESAT) Thirty-three students were seriously injured after a grenade was thrown yesterday at a group of protesters at Jimma University in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Two of the injured were in critical condition and were on life support, Jawar Mohammed, a political activist, said quoting hospital sources.

    One should ask why every year the Office of Auditor-General (OAG) of Ethiopia accuses almost all Ethiopian universities of overspending their respective budgets or making illegal payments in the form of per diems and overtime, when they are supposed to be good examples in efficient utilization of resources and timely closing of their accounts.

As schools in most nations closed for the summer, many education and research-centers-affiliated web pages have kept busy until end of July, comparing and rating the performances of universities around the world during 2014. While schools have been on holidays since beginning of July, it is our sense and anticipation that most high school completing students the world over are spending their time looking into profiles of the universities with which they aspire to link their future.

2013 performance ranking of Ethiopian universities in both African and global metrics

Amongst 974 African universities, Ethiopia’s oldest institution of higher learning – Haileselassie I University (HSIU) – rechristened Addis Abeba University (AAU) after the 1974 revolution, has in 2013 been recognized as Africa’s 30th best university, according to the research group Ranking Web of Universities.
