Rights groups have raised serious concerns over the fate of political prisoners held at a facility on the outskirts of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa after 23 inmates died in a huge fire at the high-security complex.

While the cause of the blaze remains unknown, the Ethiopian government has admitted at least two of the prisoners were gunned down by the authorities as they fled the burning building.

In the soon-ending year, we have lost huge numbers of our young children, tens of thousands have been imprisoned and the whereabouts of several others still remains unknown. We had recently announced a three-day national mourning to pay homage to the lives lost, to which the public gave an exceedingly positive response. This has left our adversaries in a state of shock and, needless to say, it has us -we and the people- beaming with pride. We appreciate the huge sacrifices you have paid and your sense of camaraderie to stand alongside the people. Please accept our gratitude and respect for your selfless acts.

Ethiopian blogger tortured at Kilinto Prison: Court adjourns for 20th time

Thursday morning it was time for the 19 th court hearing.

Today, most people wanting to attend the court were let inside. Diplomats from the US and Canadian embassies, and EU, were also present, as are many Ethiopians.
