Unrest has plagued Ethiopia for the past two years. So what’s going on? The reasons are complicated.

Journalist Martin Plaut considers this to be the beginning of the problems facing modern Ethiopia. “The TPLF and Meles Zenawi were never prepared to allow democracy and real federalism,” he told DW. But the focus on ethnic differences in the constitution has not been without consequence:”As soon as you increase the focus on ethnicity and make ethnicity the basis of the state, you basically stoke up ethnic tensions,” said Plaut.

1.   After Nigeria (182 million people), Ethiopia is Africa’s most populous country – and it is the world’s 13th most populous – with 99 million people.1.

2.   Ethiopia’s population is almost 25 percent larger than Germany’s, which is home to 81 million people.

3.   By 2050, Ethiopia’s population is expected to rise to 188 million. Back in 1950, Ethiopia had a population of 18 million — less than a fifth its current population.

At a meeting with local journalists on Thursday February 13, 2014, Ethiopia’s propaganda chief Redwan Hussein urged media operatives to furnish the international community with up to date information on the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) – the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported. The whole purpose is to get the rest of the world to stand in support of Ethiopia’s position – in his words – “አለም አቀፉ ማህበረሰብ ከኢትዮጵያ ጎን እንዲሰለፍ [ለማድረግ]”. Is this really possible?
