African Rights Groups Urge Ethiopia to Release Journalists

More than 40 press freedom and human rights organizations sent a letter to Ethiopia’s prime minister urging the release of journalists and bloggers imprisoned under anti-terrorism legislation, including 10 charged last week.

Ethiopia: Africa’s 5th largest imprisoning nation

While Ethiopia has the fifth largest prison population in Africa – including thousands of political prisoners – it is unfortunate the TPLF/EPRDF should feel too miserly even regarding the long-established tradition of prisoner releases on pardon. Therefore, this time around it released the least number of inmates from its unfortunate substantial captives on the eve of the Ethiopian New Year 2006.
