Data show Ethiopia as one of the five top national deteriorations in global & regional peace terms

by Global Peace Index 2017

Change in score 2014/15: +0.193

Change in rank 2014/15: 16
A welcome development is the fact that this year’s biggest fallers deteriorated to a lesser extent than the worst performers in the last edition of the GPI; indeed this year’s top faller, Ethiopia, had a score change less than half of that of last year’s top faller, Yemen. The five worst-performing countries are all in the sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa regions.

Ethiopia’s score has suffered as a result of violent protests that led to a state of emergency giving the government significant powers to crack down on dissidents.

“But with political freedom now a thing of the past, the government’s legitimacy rests on it delivering the prosperity it has long promised to all its citizens.”

Development now and democracy later is a non-starter for the throngs of these angry Ethiopian youth that with every passing day has less or nothing to lose! (Credit: AFP/Getty Images via The Economist)

Could democratic Italy ever take side with fascistic TPLF against the Ethiopian people?

11 Dec

By Keffyalew Gebremedhin The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)
We learned early this week about the visit to Ethiopia of the newly-appointed Italian Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Luciano Pezzotti. The visiting Horn point man for Italy had been in Addis Abeba for days since December 8, 2016, consulting with officials of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) regime.

Italy has had historical ties and strong bilateral relations with Horn of Africa nations, especially Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. It is possible to assume that his mission to Ethiopia at this point is an Italian initiative, linked to Italy’s status as an incoming newest member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) beginning January 1, 2017 – like Ethiopia.

The struggles of Ethiopians protesting repression and government-sponsored development programs have gone virtually unreported over the past year — and so has the murder of hundreds of people by the state for taking part in the resistance.
