Ethiopia’s Oromo leader facing terrorism charges; denied bail again

Dr Merera Gudina, leading opposition figure in Ethiopia and Chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), has been denied bail by a court.

Gudina is facing terrorism charges by the government which accuses him of meeting anti-government elements during a European tour last year.

The protests, unprecedented in recent years, have seen Ethiopia’s security forces use lethal force against largely peaceful protesters, killing hundreds and arresting tens of thousands more.

    Prime Minister Hailemariam is an unguided missile directed against Ethiopia. His ’employers’ (the TPLF) are not qualitatively any better. Most of the generals were fourth to seventh grade students. On seizing power in 1991, most of them concentrated on ordering degrees, although some have proved good students.

Imprisoned Ethiopian Columnist Reeyot Alemu was honored with a Courage in Journalism Award at a luncheon in New York on Wednesday. Alemu, 31, is serving a five-year sentence under Ethiopia’s controversial anti-terrorism law for email communications she exchanged with a US-based opposition group whose members are considered terrorists by the country’s leadership.
