Addis Abeba, December 12/2017 (Addis Standard): The number of civilians killed by security forces in Chelenko town, Meta woreda in east Haraghe zone of the oromia regional state has risen to 15; more than a dozen were also wounded, many of whom are in critical condition.

Given the unpredictable security situation, U.S. citizens in Ethiopia should have alternate communication plans in place, and let family and friends know that communication may be limited while you are in Ethiopia, according to US travel warning issued about two hours ago.

Never Again? Inside Ethiopia’s “retraining” programme for thousands of detained protesters

Detainees rounded up in the state of emergency were treated to a six-part course that included units in “Constitutional Democracy”, “Colour Revolutions” and “Ethiopian Renaissance”.

Looking drained last month, thousands of Ethiopian detainees swore on their release from prison to “Never Again” protest against the government. Or at least that’s what was written on their t-shirts in the well-choreographed scenes shown by the state broadcaster.

    Today, December 13, 2016, we read with interest an article on the proud accomplishment in innovative maternal health interventions to reduce mortality in Ethiopia (???!) by fellow countryman, public health researcher in Sweden Hagos Godefay Debab. We learned from his work, in 2013 maternal mortality in Tigray per 100,000 fell to 266.
