It’s a mindset/political culture in Ethiopia today things should be done at someone’s expense – the TPLF has institutionalized – Part I

Ethiopia under the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is quietly experimenting its mini-nationalization of investor properties and enterprises.

Addis Abeba, Washington’s yet unsorted ally, its move would be seen as one of the most bizarre anomaly of our time. Given that the United States now is under the most hawkish business tycoon, in his own right the first United States billionaire President Donald Trump, members of his cabinet of similar wealths, the Ethiopian regime’s move is likely to smack the new US Administration on the face.

Such nationalization, anathema to the United States, the Trump Administration experiences in less than two months since assuming power could irk many, coming as it does as the most despicable political eccentricity under their early watch.

Washington Post editorial:             Mr. Obama’s visit to Ethiopia sends the wrong message on democracy

“AFRICA DOESN’T need strongmen, it needs strong institutions.” Those were President Obama’s words when he addressed Ghana’s parliament in July 2009, during his first trip to sub-Saharan Africa as president. The historic speech, watched around the globe, was an optimistic clarion call to the leaders on the continent from the son of a Kenyan. “First, we must support strong and sustainable democratic governments,” Mr. Obama said.

Ethiopian Airlines dismisses long-term employee on political grounds: TPLF ethnic politics

Ethiopia’s national carrier last week dismissed Ato Weretaw Wasie from his supervisory post, accusing him of being a member of Blue Party. The company’s allegation, according to ESAT, was that the supervisor did not have sufficient qualifications, ironically after 14 years of service, which makes it political.

Weretaw believes he was dismissed because of belonging to a political party the TPLF regime has targeted as its foremost enemy, although the party is engaged in legal struggle against denial of freedoms and corruption of the repressive regime.

The fact that this company is increasingly engaging in the divisive and ethnic politics of the regime could at some point prove to be its slippery path to the once famous airlines being mired in increased corruption and inefficiency, against the backdrop of the massive debt the company has accumulated in the past two years.
