Dr Merera Gudina, leading opposition figure in Ethiopia and Chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), has been denied bail by a court.

Gudina is facing terrorism charges by the government which accuses him of meeting anti-government elements during a European tour last year.

Only China, Syria, and Iran rank worse in internet freedom than Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s internet is among the least free in the world. According to a new index released by the nonprofit Freedom House, Ethiopia ranked ahead of only Iran, Syria, and China, out of 65 countries in terms of access to the internet, censorship, and freedom of information. It ranked the worst of any country in Africa.

Already for more than a decade, Eritrea has carried itself as a proud nation. Among others, against TPLF fabrications it has stood on its feet and under sanctions. International aid and trade could not mediate its opening up to international investors.

Ethiopia’s drive to attract more South African investment is being hampered by a government that still distrusts business and a population wary of foreign domination.

Africa’s second most populous country wants more foreign direct investment in agriculture, energy, transport and manufacturing, among other sectors, as it seeks to sustain an average economic growth rate of 11% over the past decade, according to Wegayehu Berga, the minister counsellor of business promotion at the Ethiopian embassy in Pretoria.
