UN Secretary-General Guterres speaks out on Climate Action

30 May 2017 (UN News): Highlighting the seriousness of the impact of climate change on the planet and its inhabitants, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today called for sustained action to meet the global challenge and to ensure a peaceful and sustainable future for all.

“The effects of climate change are dangerous and they are accelerating,” Secretary-General Guterres told a gathering of students, business leaders and academics at the New York University Stern School of Business.

“It is absolutely essential that the world implements the Paris Agreement [on climate change] – and that we fulfil that duty with increased ambition,” he underscored, recalling the ground-breaking agreement that entered into force last November.

Machar reportedly denied landing at Juba airport; is there coordination with the TPLF?

    There is something kinky about this situation. At one point Machar was blaming the TPLF not giving him clearance for weapons, at another logistical problems were the reason for his delay. Now we hear that the Kiir regime is not allowing his plane to land.

    This comes a day after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed “the decision of the Government of South Sudan to accept the compromise proposal on the arrangements for the return of First Vice President-designate Riek Machar to the country.” The Secretary-general Friday expressed the hope that the deal would enable the swift formation of the transitional unity government.

Editor’s Note:

    If you ask me, what this means is that the people of South Sudan are paying with their sufferings for the arrogance and impunity of their elites. Salva Kiir is another Meles Zenawi or Hailemariam or Kenyatta, not to mention Kagame – warlords in Fifth Avenue, Savile Row and Hong Kong suits. These leaders hunger for, kill and breathe power.
