Disturbing is Dr.Tedros Adhanom’s horse trading on human rights, ironically to become WHO head

In the World Health Assembly, unlike the narrow pool of voters in the WHO’s 34-member Executive Board, one vote for 194 nations each is more promising. If my past experience is any guide, there is better chance to prevail over dictators and hope for qualitative democracy in WHA in that regard!

Why I am opposed to Dr. Tedros Adhanom becoming the ninth director-general of WHO

10 May

For those who are pressed for time, they have my sympathy. As a retired person, I recall how that frays the nerves.

My persuasion in opposing Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s aspiration to become ninth director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has benefitted from life experiences, my education at home and abroad, as well as international experiences as a former diplomat for my country and as international civil servant with the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

Fact-checking some of our opposition to Tedros Adhanom’s controversial & misplaced WHO aspiration

4 May

In trying to ensure rejection of Dr. Tedros Adhanom by the World Health Assembly (WHA) at its 70th session in Geneva, no doubt, Getahun Assefa G/Yesus‘s efforts are more than sincere.

That’s why I would like to assure him that all of us would stand with him in his every effort to sway the majority of the 194 WHA states members into denying the Ethiopian candidate their votes during the May third-quarter election processes. This is not a matter of the candidate being Ethiopian or not, or TPLF official, our beef with him is his incompetence.

Is there unholy alliance between former UK minister & Bill Gates, targeting WHO director-general’s election? What for?

29 Apr

The former UK secretary of the Department for International Development (DFID) Andrew Mitchell’s article in The Guardian (April 27, 2017) is rather troubling.

Through its sophisticated expediency, seemingly reliant on questionable Great Powers’ history of collusions and intrigues, the article exudes the interests of a few wanting to continue the same today. It reveals an underhanded effort aiming to ‘determine’ – influence is weaker here – outcome of the May 2017 election of the ninth director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).

I believe that human rights, and the right to health in particular, should be a top priority of and guiding principle for the next WHO Director-General, whom the world’s health ministers will choose at the World Health Assembly in May. Human rights, after all, encompass the values needed to achieve health for all and health justice, such as equity, non-discrimination, universality, participation, and accountability. They are legally binding precepts. Above all, they embrace human dignity, and the utmost respect for all people in health systems and health-related decisions. They embody the notion of people-centered health services.

No to Dr. Tedros Adhanom as next WHO director-general! PART II

26 Jan

By Keffyalew Gebremedhin The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)

So far, the nomination Wedenesday by the 140th Executive Board session of the World Health Organization (WHO) of three of the six candidates does not come as unexpected for anyone closely following the work of the organization.

However, more important is how the votes were cobbled up to enable the board arrive at its decision, i.e., the nomination, namely of:

Dr. Tedros Adhanom (Ethiopia), Dr. David Nabarro (United Kingdom) and Dr. Sania Nishtar (Pakistan).

No to Dr. Tedros Adhanom as next WHO director-general! PART I

23 Jan

By Keffyalew Gebremedhin The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)

“The extension to all peoples of the benefits of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to the fullest attainment of health.”

Principle 7, WHO Constitution

The purpose of this article is to impress on the 34-member Executive Board (EB) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and plead with the membership not to entrust the next leadership of this singular and vitally important United Nations specialized agency in the health field into the hands of Dr. Tedros Adhanom. The board begins its ten-day 140th session this Monday January 23, 2017 at its headquarters in Geneva, one of its agenda items being the selection of the director-general and the modalities of the processes thereon.
